Homer Lake Forest Preserve

Homer Lake Forest Preserve covers 828 acres in Champaign county. Construction of the 80.8 acre Homer Lake was completed in 1969. The preserve also includes old Homer Park, which dates back to the early 20th century. Additional areas of historical interest include an old sugar maple camp and the site of a one-room school house. The picture below was taken at Sand Beach Cove.

Homer Lake Trails

Homer Lake Forest Preserve has approximately 10 miles of trails that cross grassland, prairies, and woodlands. Trails run along Homer lake and the Salt Fork of the Vermilion river. Homer Lake is located 3 miles northwest of Homer and is part of the Homer Lake Forest Preserve. Lake-Link provides the current conditions at Homer Lake.

Kennekuk County Park

Kennekuk County Park (3,000 acres) is bordered on the west by the Middle Fork State Wildlife Area (2,700 acres). Kickapoo State Park (2,842 acres) is three miles to the south. Kennekuk County Park is an oak-hickory forest type with native tall grass prairie areas. More information is available at the Vermilion Country Conservation District site.
